Oracle databases are very robust databases that can handle many requests simultaneously and store a larger amount of information than most databases. Oracle is ideal for large business applications, but costs $199 a month for hosting (checked November 2002). Visit Oracle's site to learn more about their database solutions.
Oracle has a version for Windows servers and a version for Unix, though they are not interchangeable. That means your database developer must create the database in the version that is compatible with your web server/host. If you decide to switch from Windows to Unix, your Windows-compatible database will not work on your Unix server, though you can keep your database in one location and communicate with it from another location. You may have several websites accessing one database that has its own server. Knowing what you have and what you will need will help you plan your project.
Due to the cost of Oracle, we have not had many client requests for Oracle database work. Also, many web hosts do not allow connections to remotely hosted databases. Many large companies will host their own databases and websites but licensing fees still apply. If still interested, visit the Oracle website first.
