Java is embedded network programming to work on almost any platform. Java programs deliver real-time, interactive information over the Internet. Java's built-in security model has three primary components which protects the code from crackers (unethical hackers). Java is an object-oriented language that is reusable, extensible and maintainable. JavaBeans is Sun's interface to unite Java with Active X Microsoft plug-in. (Plug-ins are platform-specific.)
Java applets are applications (usually small) that are launched from a Web document such as an html file. Microsoft Front Page and other WYSIWYG editors use Java applets to create mouseover effects for navigation buttons. Many web hosts support Java applets that run on the client side (your computer), but not Java servlets that run from the server (website hosting server).
Your computer may have the old Microsoft Virtual Machine (Java plugin used for Internet Explorer), but Microsoft no longer supports Java. Download and install the Java plug-in available from Sun's website. The Netscape built-in Java plugin works fine. If you have a problem, read our article about Java.
