Domain Name Registration

A domain name is the address people type or click to get to its corresponding web site. To get to our web site, you would type www.powerpageswebdesign.com in the address box of your browser or click on the address in a search engine listing. A domain name is also called a web address or Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

Power Pages Web Design will help you decide which domain name or URL is appropriate for your business. Including a descriptive keyword relating to your business in the name helps your search engine visibility and ranking. After checking the availability of the name, Power Pages Web Design can apply for you or you may do so yourself. Domain name transfers and Web hosting can also be arranged for you.

Better Whois allows you to type a domain name to see if it is currently registered or available. If the domain name is registered, you can find out to whom it is registered. If the domain name is not reserved or registered, test it in the browser to be sure that no site is found. If the domain name is available, you can purchase the domain name for your own use.

We do not recommend purchasing domain names for resale. Cybersquatting is the purchasing of domain names for the intention of reselling for a huge profit. It is unethical and illegal. Purchasing expired domain names is discouraged, because you may purchase a domain name that was banned from a search engine for spamming or connected with a different target audience.

Purchasing multiple domain names to point to your site is acceptable and often recommended. You may want to purchase www.domainname.com, www.domainname.biz, www.domain-name.com, www.domain.name.com and other related names. (Substitute domainname with your business name or appropriate keywords.) You may want to purchase your business name before someone else does.

Update: There have been laws passed to protect businesses, so they no longer need to purchase every variation of their name. If someone buys a domain name that uses your business name (company name, name of branded/licensed product, DBA (doing business as), celebrity name), you may be able to stop or even sue him/her. If that person uses your name to make money from the same category, that is illegal.

For example, if someone else used powerpageswebdesign.net for web design, I could make them stop. If I can prove that the person was stealing my visitors or clients or somehow interfering with my business, I could sue for damages. Businesses pay to research names before paying for domain names. My business name was #12 on my list as the others were already in use. I paid to research and register my name, so it cannot be used offline, either. It is still cheaper and easier to register variations of your domain name.
