C was one of the first general-purpose high-level programming languages to gain almost universal use, and C can run on almost any platform and machine. C created by Denis Ritchie in 1971, as the successor to the "B" compiler, for UNIX systems. C++ allows programmers to leverage their knowledge of C with the use of Object Oriented (OO) concepts, to create larger programs with easier and with better quality. Since C++ contains all of the concepts of C, a C program can be run using a C++ compiler...but only a C++ compiler can compile a C++ program. C++ was created by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1980. The cgi-bin allows you to execute a CGI script written in Perl, Unix Shell, or C. Perl and shell programs are self-compiling and can be utilized immediately after transfer to this directory/folder. C and C++ programs may need to be compiled before uploading to the server. According to Microsoft: "Microsoft Visual C++ is the most productive C++ tool for creating the highest-performance applications for Windows and the Web. Nearly all world-class software, ranging from the leading Web browsers to mission-critical corporate applications, is built using the Microsoft Visual C++ development system."
