How Do They Know Your Site is Family Safe for Viewing? To reach the widest possible audience and not offend anyone, you should not contain any objectionable contents in your site. Hate, violence, racism, sex, nudity, profanity and any contents that insult, upset or bother viewers should not be included in most business sites. The worst you will find in this site is a reference to a religious holiday (Christian) that may not be the religion of the site visitors. If wishing someone a "Merry Christmas" is offensive, then I apologize. I send "Happy Holidays" cards to my dentists who are Jewish. Aside from an occasional mistake as described, we try to keep this site 100% family friendly. There are search engines that allow for filtered or non-filtered results that will search all sites or those that do not contain certain objectionable text or images. There are also search engines that will only provide search results that are family friendly. How do they know your site is family safe for viewing? If you look at our home page, you can see that we have been rated on Safe Surf, Google's One Key and ICRA (Internet content Rating Association). When you see any of these approvals or ratings on a site, you know that the site content was rated just as a movie gets a G rating for General audiences, PG for Parental Guidance suggested, R for Really offensive to sensitive viewers or other ratings. How can you get your site rated? Your website's web developer must go to the rating sites, answer the questions to reveal the amount of each offensive topic is included, and submit additional information about your site. Then, if approved, your web developer will include meta tags in your source code that search engines read to reveal your rating. The entire site can get an overall rating or each page could get its own rating. Sometimes only one web page could contain something offensive. Web developers should be honest when rating sites. If you see a site that was safely rated, but contained offensive contents, contact that site's web developer first. If they do not correct the problem, contact the site's business. If there is no response, contact the site whose rating appears on the site. Give the business a chance to correct the problem that may have been a mistake or overlooked. Giving your site a family safe rating will let visitors know that you care about them and do not wish to offend them or anyone else who may visit the site. This improves your company image and keeps you listed on more search engine results. And if your site does contain objectionable content, it is fair warning for visitors, so they cannot complain or be surprised. Those who are sensitive to such contents should use filtered results, look for the family safe ratings, use family safe search sites or software, or choose keywords carefully. We Blocker free Internet filtering software blocks objectionable websites from Internet surfers. Surf Safely's Search Without Surprises and Safer Internet of Europe are examples of family safe search sites. Yvette Kuhns, Power Pages Web Design, November 8, 2002Printer Friendy Version.
